John Kanakas, ARB RIBA UK, TEE GR

John is the founder of Direction Architects, an international Architecture & Design award winning practice, based in Athens and London. John received his Part 1 ,2 and 3 in Architectural Association and he is a registered Architect in the UK and Greece.

John founded Direction Architects with the vision to create living environments, that aim to make people rethink and question their ways of inhabiting everyday spaces. On a broader framework his projects attempt to create experiential spaces that provoke new forms of existence and new ways of living. Direction's projects vary in program and scale, while approaching each one with the same sensibility and design ethos. The practice's formalistic approach creates captivating experiential spaces and aims to awake our deeper consciousness while initiating a discourse across different fields.

John is a Greek-British Architect with Cypriot origins, born in Athens and lived more than a decade in London. Prior to founding Direction Architects, he gained a vast experience, working at Zaha Hadid Architects and previously at Foster + Partners, while being part of more than 20 global projects, of various scales and programs. His portfolio ranges from residential, hotel, and office design all the way to masterplans, towers and aviation and transport mega-projects. He has also been part of large scale commercial and civic projects, public squares as well as museums, consulates, embassies, culture and conference centers.

John is passionate about the relationship between cultures and architecture and has travelled in more than 50 countries around the world, in an attempt to create a broader understanding of the built environment, in relation to site specific conditions, cultural factors and local parameters that influence our cities and the spaces we live in.
Double Residency by John Kanakas

House Symbiosis Double Residency by John Kanakas House Symbiosis is a double residency, designed to accommodate two sibling families seeking to foster close bonds while preserving individual privacy. The house responds to the evolving demands of contemporary living, emphasizing familial bonds and offering a nuanced balance between communal and individual living. The primary challenge involved navigating the delicate equilibrium between privacy and socialization for the two families. Architectural experimentation with geometry, spatial orientation, facades and volumetric massing address this challenge.
