I strive to design ‘settings’, working beyond the framework of architecture to encompass the design of buildings and interiors, as well as fixtures and furnishings. With building design as a foundation, I currently provide comprehensive branding that considers the objects and experiences we can create to enliven urban areas.

I’m also engaged in regional revitalization initiatives that actively adopt traditional Japanese crafts as symbols of local communities.

Obori Soma Ware Matsunaga Kiln Shop and Atelier by Naoya TOCHIO Matsunaga Kiln was located in Fukushima, Japan, producing the designated traditional crafts with more than 300 years of history. One proprietary feature of Obori Soma Ware is its double-layered structure, which enables this daily-use ceramics to hold boiling water and prevents it from cooling down. Designers wanted to incorporate and express this feature in our architecture. Designers believe that the different scales of architecture and ceramics, in the same composition, influence each other.

Yuamu Hotel by Naoya TOCHIO The plan is to convert the banquet hall of a ryokan into guest rooms. The guest rooms have high ceilings and varying floor heights. The small tatami area and sofas were connected to create an unprecedented Japanese modern style. The design theme of the restaurant Oriori was based on the hotel's name, weaving and folding. The transparency of the folds was changed according to function to achieve a comfortable feel. It features a corridor and dining space designed to look like the outside.
