André Verroken"Just like Immanuel Kant, I start from an aesthetic idea that gives the work its soul".
Triangles in (E)motion is a story, or rather it is a story within a story. If there is one thing that immediately stands out when observing the works of André Verroken (1939), then it is that he ignores tempory trends and fashions. He is someone who has been following his own way his entire life; intuitively, emotionally and consciously involved in a specific theme. That theme, he then further investigates unravels, deepens until he has experimented with all the expressive forms it contains. This inquisitive nature is typical of his entire career, and consequently also the series of objects he has recently designed called Triangles in (E)motion. Starting from a solid geometric shape, a Star of David, he distills various forms that can both serve as designs for tables, but also be processed into abstract geometric entities which function as visual art. André Verroken is primarily an artist who, from his own set of values and forms, creates beauty in a tradition that is related to Arte Povera and Minimalism. The question whether his creations are to be perceived as utensils or visual art is basically beside the point. Kurt Vanbelleghem, september 2010 by by by by |
